Zechariah 13- The Final Destruction

1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

The fountain is the cleansing Jesus made available to everyone- The Living Water.

2 And it shall come to pass in that day, says the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.

By context, these prophets that will “pass out of the land” are false prophets, not prophets of God.

In the True Israel, there are no idols, false prophets, or unclean spirits. God cleanses us of them when we become part of His nation.

3 And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, "Thou shalt not live; for thou speak lies in the name of the LORD:" and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesies.

Even the parents of a false prophet should be so concerned for God's truth as to punish their own child who attempts such sin.

4 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:

In the day the prophet repents and becomes a part of True Israel, he will be ashamed of his past prophecies.

5 But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.

The false prophet will turn from his prophecies and become a common worker (Redneck class in our country.) He will not want to admit to having ever done anything else.

6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

Most other translations say “wounds on your body, back, or chest.”

The false prophet will either be tempted to lie and say he got hurt at a party or he will admit that those who love him best were willing to wound him for his own good (knock some sense into him, so to speak.)

7 Awake, O sword, against My shepherd, and against the man that is My fellow, says the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

Jesus quoted this in Mark 14:27 in warning His disciples that they would all deny Him.

The sword is the sword of God's justice used to crucify Jesus, the Shepherd.

8 And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, says the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

In the land of Judah, the majority were killed or taken into slavery in AD70. However, most conquerors are wise enough to know a land with no inhabitants can’t pay taxes but reverts to total wilderness. So, the Romans would choose to leave a small remnant, which “happened” to be mostly Christians.

9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on My name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is My people: and they shall say, The LORD is My God.

The part of Israel that believed Christ and was left by the Romans to work the land.
