1 The I AM said to Moses and Aaron,
2 "Tell the children of Israel, "These are the animals you can eat among all the animals on the earth.
3 "Any animal that has a two-parted hoof, and is cloven footed, and chews the cud, among all the animals you can eat.
4 "But don't eat those who don't do both. For example, the camel chews the cud, but doesn't have a divided hoof. He is unclean to you.
Camels have toes with big toenails instead of true hooves.
5 And the coney, because he chews the cud, but doesn't have a divided hoof; he is unclean unto you.

6 And the hare, because he chews the cud, but doesn't have a divided hoof. He is unclean to you.
7 And the swine, though he has a divided hoof, and is clovenfooted, he doesn't chew the cud. He is unclean to you.
8 Don't eat their meat, and don't touch their carcase. They are unclean to you.
9 These are the water animals you will eat; whatever has fins and scales, whether in the seas, or the rivers, you can eat them.
10 Any animals that don't have fins and scales in the seas and rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing that is in the water, shall be disgusting to you.
11 They shall be so disgusting to you, not only will you not eat them, you won't even touch their carcases.
12 Anything from the water that doesn't have fins and scales will be disgusting to you.
13 These are the flying things you shall find disgusting; (don't eat them. They are gross) the eagle, ossifrage, and ospray,
14 The vulture, the kite and all birds like him,
15 Anything that is like a raven,
16 The owl, the night hawk, the cuckow, and all types of hawks,
17 The little owl, the cormorant, and the great owl,
18 The swan, pelican, and gier eagle,
19 The stork, all types of herons, the Hoopoe, and the bat.
20 Don't eat winged insects that walk along the ground. You should find them disgusting.
21 But you can eat those flying insects that have jointed legs for hoping/jumping around,
22 Such as any kind of locust, cricket, or grasshopper.
23 But all other flying insects, that walk on the ground, will be disgusting to you.
24 The following will make you unclean; (you will be unclean until evening if you touch their dead bodies)
25 And whoever carries any of their carcases must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until the evening.
26 The carcases of every animal that has a divided hoof, and doesn't chew the cud, are to be disgusting to you. Everyone who touches them will be unclean.
27 And all winged animals that walk on their feet are to be disgusting to you. Whoever touches their dead bodies will be unclean for the rest of the day.
28 Anyone who carries their dead bodies must wash his clothes and will be unclean for the rest of the day, because they are unclean animals.
29 These animals will also be disgusting to you; the weasel, the mouse, and the tortose after their kinds,
30 The ferret, the chameleon, the lizard, the snail, and the mole.
31 These are unclean to you among all that crawl close to the ground. Whoever touches them, when they are dead, will be unclean for the rest of the day.
32 And anything they fall on when they die is unclean, whether it is a container made of wood, or clothes, or skin, or a sack, whatever it is, whatever work is does, it must be washed in water, and it will be unclean for the rest of the day. This is how it will become clean again.
This was to stop the spread of germs. If an unclean animal's carcase touches something there is the danger of spreading disease. This set of laws stops that.
33 And if any of them fall into a clay container, whatever is in it shall be unclean, and you shall break it.
Clay is porous and there would not be any good way to guarantee you killed the germs in it.
34 Any kind of food that is touched by the unclean water will be unclean. The same for any drinks that touch unclean containers.
Of course you don't want to eat or drink contaminated food.
35 Anything the carcase of the unclean falls will be unclean, whether it is the oven, or ranges for pots, they must be broken, because they are unclean.
36 However, a if the carcase of an unclean animal falls into a spring or cistern, they remain clean, but whoever touches the carcase is unclean.
The amount of water in a natural spring or in a cistern would dilute the chance of catching germs.
37 If any part of their carcase falls on seed which is to be planted, it will stay clean.
Planting seed would not be affected at all by disease germs.
38 But if any water is put on the seed, and any part of their carcase fall on it, it shall be unclean unto you.
You put water on seeds to sprout them to add to your salad or sometimes to make bread. So, dry seed set aside for planting can't be contaminated by unclean carcases, but seed being prepared to eat can be.
39 And even if a clean animal dies, if anyone touches its carcase, he will be unclean for the rest of the day.
40 If anyone eats the clean animal's carcase or carries it anywhere, he has to wash his clothes and will be unclean for the rest of the day.
This is speaking about animals that died of disease, accident, or attack by another animal, not ones butchered for food. Counting anyone who touches them as unclean helped stop the spread of disease and lowered the chance of food poisoning.
41 And all small creatures that swarm on the ground will be disgusting to you. Don't eat them.
42 Whether they crawl on their belly, or walk on four or more feet, don't eat them, because they are disgusting.
43 You shall not contaminate yourselves with any of them.
44 Because I am the I AM your God, you will, then, purify yourselves, and you will be holy, because I am holy. Neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of crawling thing that swarms on the ground.
45 Because I am the I AM that is bringing you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. You will be holy, because I am holy.
46 This is the law about the land animals, the birds, every living thing in the water, and every creature that crawls on the ground,
47 So you can tell the difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the animals that can be eaten and the ones you can't eat.
